Active Music Therapy in Parkinson's Disease: An Integrative Method for Motorand Emotional RehabilitationCLAUDIO PACCHETTI, MD, FRANCESCA MANCINI, MD, ROBERTO AGLIERI, CIRA FUNDAR O, MD, EMILIA MARTIGNONI, MD,AND GIUSEPPE NAPPI, MD Background: Modern management of Parkinson's disease (PD) aims to obtain symptom control, to reduce clinicaldisability, and to improve quality of life. Music acts as a specific stimulus to obtain motor and emotional responsesby combining movement and stimulation of different sensory pathways. We explored the efficacy of active musictherapy (MT) on motor and emotional functions in patients with PD. Methods: This prospective, randomized,controlled, single-blinded study lasted 3 months. It consisted of weekly sessions of MT and physical therapy (PT).Thirty-two patients with PD, all stable responders to levodopa and in Hoehn and Yahr stage 2 or 3, were randomlyassigned to two groups of 16 patients each. We assessed severity of PD with the Unified Parkinson's Disease RatingScale, emotional functions with the Happiness Measure, and quality of life using the Parkinson's Disease Qualityof Life Questionnaire. MT sessions consisted of choral singing, voice exercise, rhythmic and free body movements,and active music involving collective invention. PT sessions included a series of passive stretching exercises,specific motor tasks, and strategies to improve balance and gait. Results: MT had a significant overall effect onbradykinesia as measured by the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (p ⬍ .034). Post–MT session findingswere consistent with motor improvement, especially in bradykinesia items (p ⬍ .0001). Over time, changes on theHappiness Measure confirmed a beneficial effect of MT on emotional functions (p ⬍ .0001). Improvements inactivities of daily living and in quality of life were also documented in the MT group (p ⬍ .0001). PT improvedrigidity (p ⬍ .0001). Conclusions: MT is effective on motor, affective, and behavioral functions. We propose activeMT as a new method for inclusion in PD rehabilitation programs. Natural Support for Sexual Performance and Libido For Men and Women James Meschino DC, MS, ND In the normal aging process the decline in sex hormone levels and the declining number of functioning nerve endings in the genitalia region often contribute to a reduction in sex drive, arousal capabilities, climax and intensity of pleasure-full sensations. This can become a source of frustration and disappointment that is a common problem, which affects the quality of life for many men and women over the age of 50. As a result many people turn to hormone replacement therapy and erectile dysfunction medications to help overcome these problems. Unfortunately, hormone replacement therapy can increase risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, prostate cancer as well as heart attack and stroke. In addition, erectile dysfunction medication is not suitable for all men, carries risk for sudden death and does not affect libido, only performance. In my view, before resorting to pharmaceutical drugs, individuals should first turn to natural libido and sexual performance-enhancing herbs, which have been shown to be safe and effective in human clinical trials. The following herbal compounds have been used individually for many years by health practitioners in various countries as therapies for low libido and sexual dysfunction. When combined into a single formulation, the synergistic effects of these herbs can exert a potent influence, helping to maximize, restore and prolong sexual desire, arousal and performance in both men and women.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL: SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES AND Christine C. Dierickx, MD Visiting Faculty Member Wellman Laboratories of Photomedicine Harvard Medical School The use of lasers for hair removal has been studied for a number of years. In this procedure,laser light is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft, damaging the follicular epithelium. A clini-cal study evaluated the use of the LightSheer™ Diode Laser for hair removal. Of 92 patients,all had temporary hair loss and 89% had long-term hair loss. Regrowing hairs were shown tobe thinner and lighter than previously. Extensive clinical use of this high-power, pulsed diodelaser has resulted in recommendations for patient selection and proper use of the laser.Appropriate fluence settings have been shown to cause long-term hair loss without damagingthe epidermis, regardless of skin type.

Refer to most current package insert accompanying your test 3M™ Rapid Detection Flu A+B Test IVD FOR IN VITRO DIAGNOSTIC USE INTENDED USE The 3M™ Rapid Detection Flu A+B Test is a qualitative immunochromatographic assay used to identify the presence of Influenza A and Influenza B nucleoprotein antigens in nasal wash, nasal aspirate, nasopharyngeal aspirate, and nasopharyngeal swab specimens from symptomatic patients. It is an in vitro diagnostic assay that aids in the rapid differential diagnosis of influenza viral infections in symptomatic patients. A negative test is presumptive and it is recommended these results be confirmed by cell culture. Negative results do not preclude influenza virus infection and should not be used as the sole basis for treatment or other management decisions.
